Luncheon speaker Richard Stratford, Director of Nuclear
Energy Affairs for the U.S. State Department, discussed the need for
international cooperation on plant design, security of nuclear materials
during transport and storage, treatment and disposition of spent fuel, and
regional spent fuel repositories, such as a geologic repository located in
Russia that would serve the international community. Unless the storage
limit of the proposed Yucca Mountain repository in Nevada is raised from
the current 77 metric tons, he noted, the capacity is inadequate for
storing the amount of spent fuel currently in existence in the United
States.
